Sedation Dentistry

Testimonials
"I was so very impressed with all the staff at Kings Dental! Everyone was very kind, efficient, and my daughter and I actually enjoyed going to the Dentist last week. I am excited to try and get my husband to schedule a routine cleaning/exam visit with Kings Dental, because I know the staff there will be able to dispel his fear of Dentistry!"

Dr. Vidya Suri of Kings Dental in Garland, TX understands that a significant number of patients are fearful of visiting the dentist—even for regular check-ups and cleanings—and may avoid getting necessary dental work. For patients who are extremely anxious about dental practices or have had negative experiences in the past, our practice offers sedation dentistry.

Sedation dentistry allows Dr. Suri to provide patients with a calming treatment. Most patients can enjoy treatment without pain or needles, and few side effects. Many longer procedures can be done quickly and comfortably, and even patients who struggle with a strong gag reflex can benefit from sedation. It is an extremely popular way to get patients into the dental practice for the treatments and examinations necessary to maintain their dental health.

There are two primary types of sedation services available through Kings Dental, oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide. Many patients will benefit from nitrous oxide, although more fearful, nervous patients undergoing longer treatments may do best with oral conscious sedation.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide, which has been referred to as "laughing gas," is a mild sedative that is delivered through the nose in gas form. It is odorless and can elevate the mood within a few minutes of being administered to the patient. Patients are awake and coherent during their appointment, but they are relaxed and anxiety-free. Nitrous oxide can also be used to reduce pain during dental procedures. Nitrous oxide can be administered quickly and oxygen can be given to bring the patient back to their normal state. Patients can then drive back to work, home, or school after their appointment.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is a method of moderate sedation that is given orally. Medications used may include Valium, Halcion, Ativan, and Versed, depending on the medical history of the patient and the severity of their fears. Most of these medications are benzodiazepines and are completely safe for most patients. Patients who want oral conscious sedation will need to arrange transportation to and from their appointment and they will want to take the remainder of the day off work or school to rest.
