Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Tips for Faster Recovery After Wisdom Teeth Removal

At Kings Dental, it’s our mission to do everything to save your teeth when decayed or damaged. However, in some cases, teeth extraction is always the best course of action. For instance, if you have impacted wisdom teeth, extraction is the most viable option. If you have undergone a surgical extraction, Dr. Vidya Suri shares recovery tips.

If you have undertaken wisdom teeth removal, you are not alone. About 5 million in America undergo this procedure every year. After the wisdom teeth removal, most people should recover within three to four days, but full recovery takes a week or more. However, you can hasten your recovery by following the tips below.

Gently bite on a gauze pad

After the surgical extraction, your dentist will ask you to bite on a gauze pad to reduce the bleeding from the extraction site. This action hastens the formation of blood clots to stop the bleeding. Biting the gauze pad is essential but do it gently to avoid irritating the wound site.

Make ice your friend

After your local anesthesia wears off, you are likely to experience some pain and swelling. However, don’t worry since this is part of the recovery process. The good news is that you can reduce these symptoms by applying ice to the extraction site for about 15 to 20 minutes. Rest for about 20 minutes, then repeat this process for the next 36 to 48 hours.

Ensure your mouth stays clean

To keep your mouth clean, rinse your mouth with warm, salty water as opposed to commercial rinses that may be too strong. Besides, when brushing near the wound site, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid dislodging the blood clots in the extraction site.

Stick to soft foods

Eating a well-balanced diet is crucial to your faster recovery. However, because you have a wound, eat soft and easy-to-chew foods to avoid disrupting your wound. Foods you should be eating include blended soup, juices, mashed veggies, broths, and Jell-O.
